The Gutter Hole

Gutter installation, cleaning, and repairs can be messy, tiresome, and complicated. However, professional help isn't always necessary. Knowing how to do at least simple home maintenance can surely save a lot of expenses in the long run. Who knows, there might be a DIY personality in you waiting to come out!

Gutter Holes

One example of a gutter issue (which can worsen if neglected) are holes. A hole can start a leak, a leak can start water seeping through your house walls, water seeping through your house walls can lead to damp interiors and damp interiors will lead to damages. Fixing this is simple, as long as you have the materials.

Materials Needed

Materials you'll need for a quick fix will be a caulking gun, silicone caulk and a wire brush.

Cleaning

Make sure that the hole is clean and dry. Use a wire brush to roughen up the edges and remove any presence of dirt or rust. This ensures that the adhesive applied to it will be secure.

Caulking

To use the caulking gun, cut the nozzle of the cartridge to at least a 45 degree angle. This important for the actual application of the adhesive. The actual application might be messy, so wear gloves or use work clothing. Caulk stains are almost impossible to remove, so don't wear your flashy home clothes while doing home maintenance stuff!

Application

Practice applying the caulk to a piece of wood, the aim is to apply the right amount – not to much, not less. Slowly squeeze the caulking gun to the area of the hole. Use a finger to even out the adhesive and you can use tape to keep it secure. You can take that off after the adhesive has dried.

That's a quick fix yet a durable remedy for gutter holes – so regularly check your gutters for it!
